Contributions to the Welding Community

In 2013, Dr Emmanuel Afrane Gyasi, the CEO OF GYASON founded the Ghanaian Institute of Welding to promote welding and allied joining technologies in Ghana. From 2013 to 2016, the institute promoted welding in Ghana, including the International Institute of Welding (IIW) and its programs. In 2016, Dr Emmanuel Afrane Gyasi initiated welding training activities at the regional level in Ghana. The concept was accepted and became part of the European Union and Christian-Aid Ghana “GEOP Project”. The Growing Economic Opportunities for Sustainable Development (GEOP) project aimed to promote job creation and increase environmentally sustainable economic activities. One thematic area of the project provided skills training in welding for the unemployed youth by the IIW framework. The project also helped artisans upgrade their welding skills to broaden their knowledge and develop avenues for job creation. The project ended in 2020, and about 1,000 unemployed Ghanaian youth benefited.

Dr Gyasi has participated in several IIW Annual Assembly, Conferences, and Regional Congresses in Canada, Finland, and China. Also, he has participated in online meetings at regional and international levels. Currently, he is a technical member of the IIW Technical Commissions II and XII. Dr Gyasi is in contact with key officials of the WG-RA and constantly discusses ideas for making welding regionally and internationally attractive to the younger generation, industry, academia, etc. For the first time and to date, he organized a team of welders from Ghana to participate in the Arc Cup in China.

Dr Gyasi has written a draft report indicating his ideas on Ghana’s National Welding Capabilities and its significance to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a contribution to further improving the quality of life of Ghanaians at large. The paper was co-authored by Chris Smallbone (IIW Past President). It is intended that the draft shall be included in the white paper on IIW welding technology outcomes.

International Institute of Welding

The International Institute of Welding (IIW) is an international association focused on the exchange of knowledge in the field of welding and allied technologies. IIW is a not-for-profit organization, and our members are the associations representing the sectors of welding and allied processes in their countries.

Researchers, industry practitioners and educators, students and young professionals from over 51 countries worldwide are all part of the collaborative working platform of the International Institute of Welding (IIW). This unique international cooperation is achieved through annual and intermediate meetings of IIW working units and boards, technical networking, shared projects, events, publications and web-based communications. The outcomes are shared worldwide – promoting optimum use and innovation in joining technologies, international standardisation, and quality through education, training, qualification and certification of individuals and companies for a safe and sustainable world.
